We honour our roots, our founders' values and our sustainability leadership across generations.

Our passion for hair and compassion for people and the planet is our priority and we aim to take positive and impactful actions that leave the ecosystems and communities where we operate in a better place than how we found them. We are committed to climate neutrality across our operations by 2050.

Reduce Virgin Plastic

We are committed to using less virgin, petroleum-based plastic throughout our operations, whether it's in the manufacturing of our products, for packaging, or as packing materials used for fulfillment.

PCR Packaging

We are committed to transitioning to at least 75% post-consumer recycled (PCR) packaging by 2025.

Bio-Based Packaging

Our Paul Mitchell Clean Beauty Collection is proudly packaged in bio-based or at least 50% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic and is recyclable.*

Less Plastic in Caps

Our Paul Mitchell Clean Beauty products feature a low-profile cap that uses 46% less plastic* than a standard lid.

No Single Use Plastic

We are proud to partner with Wyndham Destinations Resorts who share our goal of eliminating single-use plastics. We are committed to reducing plastic waste by transitioning all our amenity products from single-use small bottles to full-size multi-use bottles. This conversion will reduce amenity plastic usage per room by 58% with plans to completely phase out all single-use plastic product packaging in hotels by 2025.

No Retail Plastic Bags

By switching from plastic retail bags to partially recycled paper, we have eliminated 13.3 tons of plastic production annually.

REDUCE CARBON FOOTPRINT

We are reviewing all aspects of our business for opportunities to reduce our carbon footprint. The goal is to eventually decarbonise our operations completely.

Climate Neutrality

Our ultimate goal is to reach climate neutrality across our operations by 2050. We’re currently in the early stages of developing a climate strategy that includes measuring and reducing our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Solar-Powered HQ

Solar panels on our Global Distribution Headquarters in California provide nearly 70% of the energy needed to run the building during working hours, keeping 262 metric tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere annually. This equates to keeping 58 cars off the road for a year, or decreasing the miles driven by 649,989 miles annually.*

Carbon Neutral Commerce

Paul Mitchell Clean Beauty formulas are manufactured using a combination of renewable energy sources (such as water power) and non-renewable sources which are then offset to be carbon neutral.

Carbon Offset Travel

We’re committed to offsetting carbon from all corporate travel (flights, hotels, mileage) through our partnership with TerraPass™, ensuring all JPMS™ business travel is carbon neutral.*

We work with TerraPass™ to Reduce Emissions from Deforestation (REDD+) offsets exclusively, with supported projects in Colombia and Peru. REDD+ focuses on conservation projects and the role of conservation to reduce deforestation in communities, sustainable forest management and the enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries.

Carbon Neutral Shoots

JPMS™ photo shoots are carbon neutral*. With 21 production days in 2021, we were able to:

  • Divert 80% of trash generated on set to recycling or green waste (composting).
  • Offset 39.8 tons of CO2 created during production (travel, hotel stays, shipping of equipment) via carbon offsets. That’s the equivalent of taking 8 cars off the road for a year.
  • Save 1,383 plastic water bottles by using bottle-less water service.
  • Use more than 18 kilowatts of solar energy produced on set for light electricity needs like phone and computer charging.

Hybrid Vehicles

We're switching all JPMS™ fleet vehicles to hybrid*, reducing CO2 emissions an average of 61 metric tons annually, saving the emissions from 6,864 gallons of gas (25,980 liters).**

Carbon Neutral Shipping

We’re excited to announce that we are now offsetting the carbon emissions from all of our product shipping*, including all:

  • Customer orders placed on PaulMitchell.com and shipped nationwide
  • Products shipped to distribution centers within the U.S.
  • Products shipped to JPMS™ international distribution center
  • Mailers, training and merchandising items

We work with TerraPass™ to Reduce Emissions from Deforestation (REDD+) offsets exclusively, with supported projects in Colombia and Peru. REDD+ focuses on conservation projects and the role of conservation to reduce deforestation in communities, sustainable forest management and the enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries.

SUSTAINABLE & ETHICAL SOURCING

From our commitment to cruelty-free and implementing a vendor code of conduct to using responsibly sourced ingredients and shipping materials, we are taking steps toward a more sustainable future.

Cruelty-Free Products

A Pioneer In Cruelty-Free Products

In 1980, we became the first professional beauty company to publicly stand up against animal testing. Today, that pledge to our furry friends remains a driving force in all that we do.

Vegan Products

In addition to being cruelty-free, most of our care, colour and styling products are vegan. We are committed to making 10 of our 12 product lines 100% vegan by 2023.

Awapuhi Farm

In 1983 our co-founders established a self-sustaining, solar-powered, organic awapuhi farm in Hawaii—all of the awapuhi used in our products is still harvested there today.

Tea Tree Oil

We use only 100% Australian tea tree oil, sourced from Australian farms that are certified for their responsible sourcing and harvesting practices. This can be found in our best-selling Tea Tree line.

Palm Oil

In an effort to reduce the negative effects of palm oil cultivation on the environment and communities, we are evaluating alternatives to palm oil derivatives including Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) Mass Balance palm oil as needed.

Sustainable Paper

We're taking a sustainable approach to paper sourcing. Nearly all of our paper (cardboard boxes, promotional packaging, office paper and paper supplies) is FSC-certified (harvested responsibly) and/or made from recycled materials or is tree-free*.

Beeswax

The beeswax used in Paul Mitchell® the color is sourced in West Africa, where bees pollinate year-round, so they don’t have to store honey for hibernation season. Producing beeswax in this sustainable way also supports local beekeepers and helps preserve our Earth, creating happy bees and healthy biodiversity.

SPICE Initiative

JPMS cares about delivering the best performing customer experience while at the same time protecting our planet. We have already started our transition to post-consumer recycled (PCR) packaging to take pressure off our vital resources and reduce waste to landfill.

We are also eliminating single-dose packaging in our hospitality business, re-designing product caps to reduce packaging and eliminating plastic bags for retail use.

But we know there is still much work, and we cannot do this alone. So, we are pleased to have joined the Sustainable Packaging Initiative for Cosmetics (SPICE). The SPICE Initiative brings together industry peers and other stakeholders in a pre-competitive manner to drive the future of sustainable packaging.

MINIMISE WASTE TO LANDFILL

We are taking action to reduce the amount of waste we contribute to the landfill by improving recycling rates of our packaging, launching our office e-waste and tools recycling program with Homeboy Industries, and implementing new event and catering guidelines around single-use plastic and waste.

Tool Recycling Program

We're proud to partner with Homeboy Industries, a 501c3 non-profit, to responsibly recycle the hair tools returned to JPMS*, keeping 5.6 tons of old tools out of landfill each year. The recycling process provides jobs to men and women who work at Homeboy Electronics Recycling, an R2 Certified (the world’s most widely adopted standard for responsible practices for used electronics) social enterprise committed to employing men and women who face systemic barriers due to previous gang involvement or incarceration. Additionally, we will begin to recycle our U.S. office e-waste with Homeboy Electronics Recycling.

Reduced Salon Waste

Paul Mitchell® offers select Perks Program salons a free membership to Green Circle Salons, an organization that provides sustainable waste management by sending daily by products like hair colour, used foils and hair clippings for eco-friendly recycling, repurposing and responsible disposal. Partnering with Green Circle Salons can prevent up to 95% of salon beauty waste from ending up in a landfill.

Less Paper

We're making an overall effort to decrease printed materials by switching to digital documents and eliminating packaging inserts. This is keeping approximately 170 tons of paper annually from being manufactured, saving 4,080 trees!

Recycled Aluminium Tubes

All Paul Mitchell Professional Hair Color Tubes are made with up to 45% recycled aluminium and are 100% recyclable. Aluminium is an indefinitely recyclable material that takes up to 95% less energy to recycle than to produce new aluminium.

In the UK we are proud to partner with Green Salon Collective who collect and recycle all used aluminium from salons including colour tubes and dirty foil.
