Behind the Bottle: Awapuhi Wild Ginger
Once upon a time...
...on the tropical island of Hawaii, women washed their hair in the waterfalls, using the juice from a bright red flower with a distinctive smell and deep cleansing and moisturising properties. Paul Mitchell soon recognised the importance of Awapuhi and it wasn’t long before this wonder plant was widely used within the Paul Mitchell® range. Paul’s main priority was to continue to produce Awapuhi in the most natural conditions possible, reflecting the plant’s local origins and helping to protect the environment.
In 1983, Paul Mitchell and John Paul DeJoria purchased land in Hawaii that would become the sustainable, solar-powered Awapuhi Farm. The two friends and business partners wanted to pursue a lifestyle that was connected to nature and in tune with their beliefs. To this day, all of the Awapuhi used in John Paul Mitchell Systems® products is harvested here. No chemical process is involved in creating Awapuhi. The finely powdered root is blended with pure water and eventually turned into a liquid ready to add to the products to help cleanse, condition and revitalise the hair. Awapuhi Wild Ginger® is the result of years of research where the treatment range, luxuriously uses the richest part of the plant’s root.
Tradition meets technology...
Daily stress can damage hair from the cuticle to the cortex. Keratin fibres within the cortex are joined by peptide bonds - when those bonds are broken, hair becomes fragile and weak. KeraTriplex® is a blend of three proteins with targeted molecular weights that penetrate into the cortex, rebuild disrupted bonds and reinforce the cuticle.
Derived from New Zealand sheep’s wool, KeraTriplex® is virtually identical to the protein found in human hair. Raised on green pastures without chemicals or antibiotics, our sheep are never harmed during the shearing process. The fleece is specially treated to maintain its reparative benefits, creating the most potent blend of keratin proteins in hair care today.
The result is healthier-looking and instantly restored hair. A long-lasting sacrificial shield smoothes the cuticle and protects from further damage.
Today Awapuhi Wild Ginger® is a firm stylist and consumer favourite worldwide.
